Mike Hawkins, M.D.
Regional Medical Director
Dr. Hawkins oversees our programs in the southeast region of the country. Inspired by Wachter and Goldman’s 1996 New England Journal of Medicine article where the phrase hospitalist was first coined, Dr. Hawkins sold his internal medicine practice and moved to Charlotte, NC, to help start the first hospitalist team at Presbyterian Hospital. Two years later he returned to South Carolina to start up a hospitalist program in Walterboro, where he was the program director for eight years. Dr. Hawkins is a member of the American Medical Association and is a fellow of the American College of Physicians. He is a recipient of the several awards, including the American Red Cross Regional Doctor of the Year Award. He joined Cogent in 2006.
