Rusty Holman, M.D.

Dr. Holman has maintained a long-standing commitment to leadership development and the improvement of safety and quality in hospital medicine.
He is immediate past-president of the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) and the Society’s key liaison to The Joint Commission. His commitment to physician leadership development led to his creation of the SHM Leadership Academies and founding of the Leadership Development Committee. He is also founding member of the Performance and Standards Task Force and former Treasurer of the Society. In 2002, he received the SHM Award for Outstanding Service in Hospital Medicine.
Before joining Cogent, Dr. Holman was Medical Director of Hospital Services for HealthPartners Medical Group & Clinics (HPMG&C), as well as Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine. In 1997, he founded the HPMG&C hospitalist program and eventually expanded it to 30 physicians at four hospitals. During his tenure, Dr. Holman served as a residency program director for internal Medicine, provided oversight for quality and utilization activities throughout the health system, and championed leadership and workforce development activities for the enterprise. He was also founder and director of the HealthPartners Fellowship Program in Hospital Medicine, one of the nation’s first fellowships dedicated to the professional development of hospitalists.
Dr. Holman received undergraduate degrees in psychology and religious studies, followed by his medical degree, from Washington University in St. Louis. He served as resident and chief resident in internal medicine at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Holman serves on two national editorial boards for medical publications, has published widely including in the Annals of Internal Medicine and has co-authored and co-edited a reference standard textbook called Comprehensive Hospital Medicine.
